Mort Künstler’s Comments
I have never met anyone who rode in a Model A rumble seat that did not remember it. It is my favorite nostalgia car. The one I used as a model for this painting is a 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe Roadster owned by Dr. Robert Sullivan of Commack, New York.

I remember coming home from a game with six of us crammed in – just the way I have painted it. I placed the car in the early 1950s, the way I remembered it. The only liberty I took was shining up the car. I could not bear painting it as an old jalopy like the one I rode in.

The 1952 Chevrolet and the Ford and Mercury in the background certainly do not have the style or dash of that old Model A.

The ferry boat is a side paddle wheel of the type that was built around the turn of the century and was in continuous service well into the 1950s. They carried passengers and six or eight cars across bays and rivers throughout the country until the bridge building programs of the 1950s and 1960s put an end to that era.

My wife posed for two of the cheerleaders, so I named the boat after her.
