Historical Information
Like a rolling wave, the stirrings of liberty swept across the American colonies in 1775 after British troops fired on colonial militiamen at Lexington, Massachusetts. It was “the shot heard” round the world,” and it ignited the simmering tensions between distant Great Britain and the 13 colonies.
After news of the Battle of Lexington reached New Haven, the impetuous Captain Benedict Arnold of the Connecticut militia, before he became infamous as a traitor, demanded the key to the King’s Powder House from New Haven’s Tory officials. He then armed and readied volunteers from the 2nd Company of the Governor’s Foot Guards, and marched north to the aid of his countrymen in Lexington. Throughout the Colonies, American citizen – soldiers responded to the patriots’ call from Lexington and prepared to defend home, land and liberty.
