2016 Mort Künstler Collectible Ornament
Winds of Winter
We proudly introduce our 21st edition Mort Künstler Collectible Ornament for 2016 titled Winds of Winter.
Historical Information
It was nothing like their early dreams of war. Federal forces had invaded the Shenandoah Valley, and an army of Southern soldiers had been dispatched to protect their homeland. Their objective was the Shenandoah Valley hamlet of Romney, where the Northern army was encamped - but the Valley weather, not the Yankees, proved to be the fiercest enemy. Less than a year earlier, these sons of the South had rushed to arms, filled with romantic notions of gallantry and glory. Now they faced the reality of life in the field.
Mort Künstler’s Comments
A great source of inspiration for my paintings has been the work of the highly esteemed author and historian, Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr. His best-selling biography, Stonewall Jackson: The Man, The Soldier, The Legend, is no exception. His vivid description of Jackson’s winter expedition from Winchester to Romney, West Virginia, was the primary inspiration for The Winds of Winter.
From the school:
Timber Ridge School proudly presents limited edition Christmas ornaments featuring the artwork of renowned Civil War artist Mr. Mort Künstler.
Each ornament comes in a black presentation box, with black felt backing, red ribbon, a certificate of authenticity and an ornament stand. Timber Ridge School is a licensed residential treatment and accredited educational program serving young men with a history of serious emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties. As a fundraiser the school creates a Christmas ornament featuring the art of Mort Kunstler, which is donated by the artist for this use.

Mr. Künstler has been a very generous supporter of the School since 1996 by donating the use of a piece of his artwork for our ornaments. His tremendous support of our program was recognized in March of 2003 with the dedication of the Mort Künstler Residence Hall. We can’t thank him enough for his partnership to the students and families we serve.
All proceeds from the sale of ornaments are earmarked for the improvement of campus programs and facilities.
