Book on Mort Künstler’s Men’s Adventure Art

Mort Künstler: The Godfather of Pulp Fiction is the first book to showcase the original cover paintings and interior illustrations Mort Künstler created for the men’s pulp adventure magazines published in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. This artwork is not only amazing in itself, it also honed the skills that later made Mort America's premier historical artist.
“I would churn out work. For many years, every month I did three covers and two inside illustrations for the men’s adventure magazines. Then sometimes there were lengthier assignments, needing six or eight pictures. And that didn't include work I did for other publishers! I worked 12-hour days, 15-hours days, sometimes seven days a week.” – Mort Künstler

From the Preface
“Celebrated for his meticulously researched and designed paintings bringing the American Civil War and other historical subjects into close view, Mort Künstler is also a masterful and prolific artist whose illustrations have enthralled readers on the covers and pages of popular periodicals for more than six decades. His daring illustrations for Argosy, True, Men’s Pictorial, Male, Stag, Sports Afield, Outdoor Life, American Weekly, and The Saturday Evening Post, and for movie posters, book jackets, packaging, and advertisements set the bar for published imagery, reflecting his agility, skill, and exploration of diverse artistic genres comprising an extraordinary creative journey.”

Mort Künstler (b. 1927), one of the most prolific and best-admired American artists, is known for his extensive research and artistic mastery of U.S. historical subjects. His paintings are in over 50 museum collections and have been the subject of more than 60 one-man shows. Künstler has chronicled American History from before the Europeans arrived, through 21st century military experiences, and popular culture. His prolific body of work began with his early illustrations for men’s adventure magazines of the 1950s and 1960s, which helped define an era in publishing. His captivating and sometimes provocative images adorned the covers and illustrated the stories in magazines such as Male, Stag, For Men Only and True Adventure. These images have become emblematic of pop culture.
