Historical Information
Early in the nineteenth century, St. Louis, a city growing prosperous from the fur trade, considered itself to be “the capital of the West.” On August 21, 1813, Auguste Chouteau read an announcement of the charter for the first bank in the Missouri Territory. Standing beside him on the porch of the Laclede-Chouteau House was Manuel Lisa who, with Chouteau, dominated the fur trade in those early years. Among those present was also Governor William Clark, explorer of the West.
