The South lost a major stronghold when Atlanta surrendered to the Union on September 2, 1864. After several pitched battles, the Confederates knew defeat was inevitable. General William T. Sherman had seized all of Atlanta’s railroads, cutting off the main supply lines for Confederate General John Hood.
